When a customer asked for a forward-looking view of all upcoming changes, outages, and corporate events, we designed and built a custom Change Forward Calendar — a single, clear view of what’s coming next across IT and business functions.

The Requirement
The brief was to create a calendar of forward events that:
- Displays future-scheduled changes by IT domain.
- Includes patching, board meetings, AGMs, and outages (planned, unplanned, or degradation).
- Allows filtering by Change Window, Outage Window or Team.
- Differentiates event types by colour (e.g. patching vs. outage vs. corporate).
The goal was to give teams a shared understanding of who’s changing what and when. It also helped leadership identify sensitive periods (such as board meetings) where change activity should pause.
The Design
This was built in 2023, when ServiceNow did not yet provide a native Change Forward Calendar.
We approached it as a design challenge, not just a technical build.
- The calendar view brings together all scheduled events into one clear timeline.
- The left-hand panel allows filtering by domain or window.
- Each item is colour-coded for quick recognition.
- The query logic was tuned for speed and scalability.
I led the design and architecture, ensuring the data model, performance, and interface came together seamlessly. The result was a solution that felt native to the platform yet offered far more flexibility than the out-of-the-box view.
The Outcome
The Change Forward Calendar became a key planning tool for leadership and change management teams. It improved:
- Visibility of upcoming activity.
- Coordination across technical and business teams.
- Confidence in scheduling and governance decisions.
It proved that with thoughtful design, ServiceNow can be extended beyond its standard functionality, delivering custom solutions that are as elegant as they are effective.
